This exhibition has been conceived by artist Miriam Yammad, spurred on by conversations around her new publication Self-Portrait. Having invited Miriam Stoney to contribute a text to the book, the invitation to exhibit together was extended, giving new context to their dialogue. Self-Portrait centres around a series of photographs by Yammad, ongoing since 2008. In this work, the artist photographs people based on their physiognomic likeness to herself. Playful yet provocative, the project is charged with Yammad’s connective instinct and a desire to relate – however fleetingly – rather than identify. Shown in the same space are selected pieces from Miriam Stoney’s series Deconstitution. Each contains a page, torn from a book, found by the artist on the streets of Vienna while walking her dog. Overall, the exhibited works speak to a certain quotidien magic – a melding of chance and instinct, accident and intent. Presented together, our attention is drawn to their contemporaneity – each series unfolding in parallel, at their own pace. Crossing paths every couple of years, perhaps in the same bus station. Or university campus. Or Dunkin Donuts.
